Update on the rom hacking scene of pokemon mystery dungeon (all games)

PMD ROM Hacking Weekly - November 8th, 2021

I decided I will now include mirror link to the patches here. This is in the goal of simplifying the download (having a direct download instead of having to go thought google drive/mega or non-DDL services), as well as ensuring it stay online even if the original download link disappear. If you don't want me to mirror your mod/think it isn't a good idea to do this, send me a message (contacts method at the end of the article).

In addition (this is both kinda independant and related), I've made my patches archive avalaible at hacknews.pmdcollab.org/archive. I also included some other type of contents (thought it's incomplete).

And I finally enabled the redirection of all non-secure traffic to the secure version (a.k.a HTTP -> HTTPS, even if HTTPS was already present before). If you have issue with old Android, use a recent firefox build or add let's encrypt to your SSL certificates list. Use let's encrypt and auto-renewal.

Explorers of Death is on hiatus

Hello everyone. I'm sorry for the lack of updates on the romhack and am even more so that this is the type of news you're getting after so long. Unfortunately I have far too many real life commitments to be able to continue this project, and so either this romhack will be on hiatus for a very long time (best case scenario is a few months, but most likely years) or I will have to stop development entirely. I'm so sorry that I have to let you all down like this as we've built up an amazing community here, but I have no control over my situation. I know this isn't a good outcome but I hope you all can understand.

Again, I am deeply sorry for this but I hope that what already exists of the romhack is satisfactory and that this community can remain as great as it is after this.

Thank you for reading, and for being a part of this community. I hope this isn't a deal breaker for too many of you.

Explorers of the spirit Act 4 is approaching...

Act 4 (Chapters 14, 15, and 16) of Explorers of the Spirit is approaching its release, so that means it's once again time for premonitions. Submit a specific, correct guess at something that will happen in EotS, and you might be mentioned in the credits! The Creative Team is currently looking to commission a video editor, that is familiar with Explorers of the Spirit, for a 45 second trailer. The deadline for this video will be September 24, so we would like to have an editor decided by September 17 at latest.

Features & Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a bug where starter selection could result in a crash on original hardware (credit: Irdkwia)
  • Fixed the title card! (again)
  • Various minor dialogue fixes

Gameplay Adjustments

In general, Act 3 came out a little more difficult than intended. With these changes, we hope to ease the difficulty bump from Act 2 to Act 3, without removing the unique characteristics of the Act 3 dungeons that people seem to enjoy.

  • Kecleon Shop (Treasure Town):
    • Lowered the purchase price of Reviver Seeds from 2000 to 1600

The original intention of raising the price of reviver seeds was to discourage overreliance on retries while going through the game. While that price increase did result in this behavior, we think that the 2,000 Poke price point in v0.53 was a little too restrictive for the particular effect that we were looking for.

  • Horn Valley:
    • Increased the spawn rate of Gravelerocks
    • Decreased the spawn rate of Poke

Many players seem to have encountered trouble in close quarters encounters in Horn Valley, and as a result we placed higher emphasis on the primary universal tool that players should comfortably have access to during this dungeon.

  • Murky Forest:
    • Increased the spawn rate of Rainy Orbs
    • Increased the spawn rate of Sandy Orbs
    • Increased the spawn rate of Drought Orbs
  • Glaceon:
    • Lowered base HP
  • Castform:
    • Removed Hail from movepool
  • Jynx:
    • Secondary ability changed from Forewarn to Null

Your complaints about Murky Forest have been heard, loud and clear. A lot of the frustrating evasion-focused elements of the dungeon have been notably toned down - Jynx has lost access to evasion shenanigans completely, Glaceon now goes down much quicker, and changing the weather via orbs now has a much lower opportunity cost due to the higher spawn rate of these orbs, and the removal of Castform's ability to change the weather back to hail.

  • Added a new option to make the fallback one-room floor that generates when the game can't generate a valid floor NOT a monster house (normally it would be one; thanks to UsernameFodder!)
  • Fixed not being able to have less than 4 moves in the move pool
  • Fixed IQ skills being broken when IQ gains were randomized
  • Randomized games should work on real hardware again
